Emergency Management Careers in Knox County, Tennessee

In Knox County, emergency management services are administered by a partnership with Knoxville and Knox County, designated as the Knoxville-Knox County Emergency Management Agency (KEMA).  KEMA provides a number of critical services including the development and implementation of operations plans for city and county government continuity during a disaster. KEMA also provides training to agencies, public health officials and other groups on how to respond to terrorist incidents involving Weapons of Mass Destruction.

KEMA has a staff on duty 24 hours a day that monitors events throughout the county.  If an event like a hazardous material spill, train derailment or severe storm should occur, the duty officer would alert KEMA coordinators who would activate the Emergency Operations Center (EOC).  From the EOC, emergency managers can notify personnel at police, fire or EMS agencies as well as public officials.  If the situation necessitates it, the KEMA coordinator may contact state or federal agencies to request additional resources.
